1 Cor. 4:9
For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings.
The people of the time thought that God made a spectacle of the apostles. They thought the apostles were the same type of men as the gladiators of the time. Gladiators fight in the area, and were trained to die. Gladiators were not supposed to survive the first day. Gladiators were supposed to die the first day they appear in the arena.
In the morning gladiators were given armour to protect themselves. If they survived the first day, they were not given armour for the second day because they were not supposed to be alive.
The apostles live in danger every hour of the day. Gladiators was special men, trained and appointed to die. Paul said they were treated the same as gladiators. If there was no life after death, Paul said his life was the same as that of a gladiator. To be alive with no future. Paul stated that he received the sentence of death, but it was the difference between him and a gladiator. The gladiator trust was in himself and that of Paul in God!
